Viking Welding & Fabrication: The Katy Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Viking-compatible welding and fabrication components across Katy, with most welded gate frame repairs and bracket replacements running between $240 and $680 installed, depending on where the crack or break sits and whether the gate needs to come off its hinges. If the weld split on a hinge boss or an actuator mount, we can usually have it cut out, re-welded, ground clean, and repainted same-day. The call usually starts the same way: a gate that suddenly drags on the driveway, a motor that labors against a sagging leaf, or a crack someone spotted while pulling out of the garage.
The part that fails on a Viking gate in Katy is rarely the welds themselves. It’s the steel around them. Heat, humidity, and the constant torque of a heavy gate leaf working against a mounting point eventually fatigue the parent metal. We see it most often on the hinge-side upright, exactly where the lower hinge plate ties into the frame.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking residential and light-commercial gate systems in Katy fall into two broad camps: the welded steel frame gates that carry a Viking operator (the G-5, L-3, and T-21 series are the ones we see most), and the bolt-together aluminum frames where welding is limited to steel inserts and hinge mounts. The compatibility gotcha that catches owners is the hinge barrel diameter. Viking’s steel frame gates typically use a 1-inch hinge barrel on the leaf side, but we’ve measured 7/8-inch barrels on several older Katy installs where the gate was fabricated before Viking standardized the spec. If you’re ordering a replacement hinge boss or weld-on plate, use a caliper on the barrel before anything gets cut. Half an inch of slop in a hinge boss translates to a gate leaf that sags an inch at the latch side within six months.
For the steel-frame Viking gates, we recommend OEM weld-in corner brackets when they’re available for the model, because the radius matches the original tube profile. Quality aftermarket steel plate stock (A36, 3/16-inch or heavier) works fine for gussets, hinge reinforcement plates, and actuator mounting pads, provided the fabricator cleans the zinc coating before welding and re-coats the heat-affected zone. We’re an independent shop and fabrication partner in Katy, not a Viking dealer, so we’re free to use the best option for your specific gate rather than steering you toward a parts catalog.
Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The gate drags at the latch end but the hinges look fine. The hinge-side upright has usually cracked at the lower hinge boss and the whole leaf has rotated a few degrees. The crack is often hidden under the hinge plate and invisible until the gate is lifted.
- The operator motor runs but the gate barely moves. When a weld opens on the actuator mounting pad, the arm pushes against air for the first few inches of travel instead of moving the gate. The motor runs longer and hotter trying to compensate.
- A crack runs through the powder coat in a straight line. That’s not a scratch. It’s the parent metal fatiguing under a stress riser, usually at a corner joint or where a cross-member meets the upright. Straight-line cracks follow the weld edge or the edge of a plate; they’re structural, not cosmetic.
- The gate leaf has a visible twist when viewed from the street. A broken weld on a diagonal brace lets the frame parallelogram under its own weight. The gate closes, but the top and bottom no longer sit parallel to the driveway.
- You hear a creak or a pop when the gate reverses direction. That sound is a crack opening and closing under cyclical load. It will get louder, and the crack will get longer, until the steel separates completely.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Katy, welded gate frame repair on Viking gates runs:
- Hinge boss or weld-on hinge plate replacement: $240 to $380 per leaf, including cutting out the old plate, welding in the new one, and re-coating the repair area.
- Actuator mounting pad or bracket re-weld: $180 to $320, depending on whether the pad needs complete replacement or just re-welding and gusseting.
- Full corner joint re-fabrication (cracked upright at a corner): $380 to $680, including the steel, cutting, welding, grinding flush, and repainting the heat-affected zone.
- Diagonal brace replacement or re-weld: $220 to $400, depending on brace length and whether the gate needs to be removed from its hinges for the repair.
The price is written down and handed to you before we cut anything. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, and it applies to every weld, every plate, and every inch of grinding on the job. What drives the range is access: a cracked corner on a gate leaf we can weld in place costs less than a lower hinge boss that requires pulling the leaf, laying it flat on sawhorses, and re-hanging it after the repair. Every weld job includes a photo log of the crack before, the repair after, and the new part number or steel spec installed. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld fails or the gate sags again within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things without picking up a tool. Look for straight-line cracks in the powder coat near hinge points and mounting pads. Put a level on the top rail and see if the gate leaf sits plumb. Photograph anything suspicious and send it over. That’s useful information, and it costs you nothing.
What you should not do is weld a cracked gate frame yourself unless you’re a competent welder with a machine that can handle 3/16-inch steel outdoors. A gate leaf under tension stores energy. Cutting a broken weld on a leaf that’s still hung can release that tension suddenly, and a 300-pound gate moving six inches in the wrong direction breaks bones. We’ve re-welded more than a few DIY repairs in Katy where the owner’s flux-core machine laid a bead that looked fine for three weeks and then cracked because the base metal was never cleaned or the penetration was shallow. If the part that failed is welded steel, call (346) 818-3319 and we’ll come out, name what we found, and put a written price in your hand before any work starts.
FAQs
A properly welded and re-coated joint on a Viking steel gate in Katy should last 15 to 20 years, with the paint failing before the weld does. The variables are humidity exposure, how often the gate cycles, and whether the original fabrication used adequate plate thickness. We see gates in Cinco Ranch and Firethorne that were installed with 1/8-inch hinge plates fail in under five years, while 3/16-inch plates are still solid at twelve.
Most cracked Viking gate frames can be repaired by cutting out the cracked section, welding in fresh steel, and reinforcing the joint with a gusset if the original design was underbuilt. The exceptions are gates where rust has compromised multiple joints and the metal is too thin in too many places to weld reliably. Call (346) 818-3319 and we’ll tell you which one you have, with photos.
A hinge boss replacement runs about three to four hours including pulling and re-hanging the leaf, welding, grinding, and re-coating. A simple actuator mount re-weld is usually done in under two hours. We’ll give you a timeframe in writing when we quote the job.
We keep A36 steel plate in 1/8-inch, 3/16-inch, and 1/4-inch thicknesses, weld-on hinge bosses in 7/8-inch and 1-inch barrel diameters, and square and round tube stock matching common Viking gate frame profiles on the truck or at the Katy shop. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators, so we can address the motor side of the gate on the same visit if needed. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you the lead time before we start, never after.
