Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To

Ghost Controls runs essentially two hardware generations: the original axle-and-sleeve hinge setup on early ghost-branded swing arms, and the current ball-bearing roller assemblies used across the TSS1, TDS2, and AXDP series. The critical compatibility gotcha is the roller shaft diameter. Older Ghost Controls hinges use a 5/8-inch shaft. Newer production runs, especially on the TDS2 heavy-duty kits, stepped up to a 3/4-inch shaft with a wider bearing face. You cannot press a 3/4-inch roller into a 5/8-inch hinge bracket without machining the bracket, and we have replaced enough wallowed-out brackets in Katy to tell you it is not worth attempting.

To identify what you have, look at the hinge plate where it bolts to the gate frame. Ghost Controls stamps the part number on the back face of the bracket, not the front. You may need a mirror or a phone camera to read it. The roller itself will have a brand marking on the bearing seal: OEM Ghost Controls rollers are stamped GC-HR followed by two digits. Aftermarket equivalents from brands like US Gate Supply or Diamond H work fine for most residential duty, but we use OEM or better on any gate over 300 pounds because TX heat accelerates bearing seal failure on cheaper units.

One more thing worth knowing: Ghost Controls hinges are side-specific. The left and right hinge brackets are mirror images, and the roller sits in a captured channel, not a through-bore. Installing a left bracket on the right side puts the roller in compression instead of shear. It fails in months, not years.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing

• The gate sags at the latch end by a half-inch or more. This is the classic symptom of a worn roller bearing. The gate’s weight shifts off the hinge axis and onto the operator arm, which was never designed to carry vertical load.
• You hear a grinding or chirping from the lower hinge when the gate moves. Chirping means the bearing seal has failed and the balls are running dry. Grinding means the race is already scored. In Katy’s humidity-to-dust cycle, once you hear it, replacement is days or weeks away, not months.
• The gate pauses mid-travel or reverses for no apparent reason. The Ghost Controls control board reads increased amp draw as an obstruction. A failing roller adds enough resistance to trigger a false reversal on colder mornings when the grease is thick.
• The operator arm bracket shows fresh scrape marks or the arm sits at a visible angle. When the hinge roller collapses enough that the gate drops, the arm takes the misalignment. The scrape marks are the gate telling you the geometry changed.
• The gate moves a few inches, then stops and the operator resets after a few minutes. This is the thermal overload in the motor. It is almost always a mechanical bind at the hinge, not an electrical fault, and the hinge is the cheapest thing to check first.

DIY or Call Us?

The honest split goes like this. You can safely identify the part: read the stamp on the hinge bracket, measure the roller shaft with a caliper, and photograph everything. You can also safely remove the operator arm so the gate swings free for inspection. What we do not recommend is pressing out the old roller without the right support tool. The bearing is press-fit, and hammering it out sideways bends the hinge bracket ears. Once the ears are splayed, the new roller walks out under load and you are back where you started with an extra $120 bracket on the invoice.

There is also the gate weight issue. A 16-foot Katy iron gate with a Ghost Controls TDS2 on it weighs several hundred pounds. If the hinge fails while the gate is off its support block, that weight comes down fast.
